Active Directory: FSMO Role Issues

What you’ll notice: You can’t add new users or change group settings. Schema updates may also fail.

Why it happens:

• The server that holds the FSMO roles is offline or misconfigured

How to fix it:

• Run netdom query fsmo to find which server holds each role
• If needed, transfer or seize FSMO roles using ntdsutil
• Make sure the FSMO holder server is stable and backed up
