Fibre internet is highly reliable but it does depend on electricity. During load shedding, even if your fibre provider’s network remains online, your on-site equipment (router, ONT box, switches) will power off unless it’s connected to a backup power source. This can result in total internet loss during outages, affecting VoIP phones, email, cloud access, and security systems.
To stay online during load shedding, we recommend pairing your fibre installation with:
- A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to power your router and ONT for 2–4 hours
- A portable inverter or battery backup for longer power interruptions
- A SIM card internet router (LTE or 5G) as a failover that activates automatically when fibre drops
Our routers support auto-failover, meaning they can switch from fibre to SIM-based internet without interrupting your video call, file transfer, or CRM system. This redundancy is especially valuable for businesses where uptime directly affects revenue.
We also offer power consultation services, where we assess your network and recommend the right UPS size based on the wattage of your devices.
In areas with frequent or extended power cuts, we strongly suggest combining both power and internet failover systems. This ensures seamless operations and gives your team confidence, even when Eskom says otherwise.
In summary: Load shedding can disable fibre without backup power. A UPS or mobile data failover ensures your connection stays live when your power doesn’t.
