Can I have more than one type of connectivity for redundancy?

Why One Connection Isn't Enough

Every connectivity type has a single point of failure somewhere: a fibre line can be cut by construction or cable theft, a microwave link can be blocked by a new building or extreme weather, an LTE tower can lose power or become congested. Running two genuinely independent connections means the failure of one doesn't take your whole business offline, because the second path doesn't share the same physical infrastructure or failure point.

  • Fibre + LTE/5G failover, the most common setup for SMEs: fibre as primary for cost-effective high-speed connectivity, with an LTE SIM automatically taking over if fibre drops. Since LTE runs on entirely separate infrastructure (mobile towers, not fibre trenches), a fibre cut doesn't affect it at all.
  • Fibre + microwave, used where genuinely independent physical paths matter more, since both are wired/fixed technologies with higher sustained bandwidth than LTE, this suits businesses with heavier continuous bandwidth needs that still want a true second path.
  • Dual fibre providers, for businesses where even LTE's bandwidth ceiling is a concern, running fibre from two different network operators (ideally on physically separate routes into the building) protects against provider-specific outages.

How Automatic Failover Actually Works

A dual-WAN router continuously monitors both connections and, the moment it detects the primary has failed, redirects all traffic to the backup within seconds, without anyone needing to notice or manually intervene. Without proper failover configuration, having two connections but requiring someone to manually switch a cable defeats much of the purpose.
