What is an IP PBX / VoIP phone system?

An IP PBX (Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange) is a business phone system that routes calls over your internet connection using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) instead of traditional analogue copper phone lines. Rather than a physical box of wiring and circuit boards sitting in a comms cupboard, the actual call-routing intelligence typically lives in the cloud, delivered to you as a service.

How It's Different From a Traditional PABX

A traditional PABX is on-premises hardware you own, maintain, and eventually watch become obsolete as parts and support dry up. An IP PBX (or hosted PBX) moves that intelligence off-site into redundant, professionally managed data centres, while your physical handsets, desk phones, softphones on laptops, or mobile apps, connect to it over your internet connection rather than dedicated copper wiring.

What Actually Changes for Your Team

Day to day, using an IP PBX phone doesn't feel dramatically different from a traditional handset, dial, answer, transfer, put on hold. What changes is what's possible behind the scenes: extensions can follow a person between office desk, mobile app and laptop softphone under one number, adding a new starter is a configuration change rather than an engineer visit and new wiring, and features like call recording, voicemail-to-email and detailed call reporting come standard rather than as expensive add-ons.

Key Benefits

  • No hardware refresh cycles, no PABX box to eventually replace every 7 to 10 years
  • Scales instantly, add or remove extensions without rewiring
  • Works from anywhere, staff can answer their business extension from home, a branch office, or a mobile app while travelling
  • Built-in resilience, calls can automatically reroute to mobile numbers if your office loses power or internet, something a traditional PABX simply can't do
  • Modern features standard, call recording, IVR menus, voicemail-to-email, detailed reporting, and integration with CRM and helpdesk tools

What You Need to Make It Work

The main requirement is a stable internet connection with enough bandwidth for your concurrent call volume, roughly 100kbps per simultaneous call, plus a small amount of overhead. This is why connectivity quality and IP PBX go hand in hand, a great phone system on a poor internet connection will still deliver a poor calling experience.

Our Approach

We deploy hosted PBX as part of an accountable communications service, meaning the same team managing your phone system also manages the underlying connectivity it depends on. That matters in practice: when something goes wrong with call quality, there's no finger-pointing between a telephony vendor and an internet provider, one team owns the whole path from your handset to the person on the other end of the call.
