Can I use VoIP with a mobile phone?
Yes, and this is one of the more practically useful features of a modern hosted PBX, your business extension can follow you onto your mobile phone through a dedicated softphone app, without needing a separate physical device or a second phone number.
How This Actually Works
Most hosted PBX platforms provide a mobile app that registers as an extension on the system, functioning essentially as a software-based phone. Calls to your business number can ring simultaneously on your desk phone and your mobile app, or route to your mobile specifically when you're marked as away from your desk. Outbound calls placed from the app show your business caller ID, not your personal mobile number, keeping business and personal calling identities properly separate.
Two Different Approaches Worth Distinguishing
- VoIP softphone app, uses your mobile's internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to place and receive calls through the hosted PBX platform directly, giving you full extension functionality: transfer, hold, access to the company directory, presence status
- Call forwarding to a mobile number, a simpler alternative where the PBX simply forwards calls to your regular mobile number using standard cellular calling, less feature-rich but works even without a data connection
What You Need for It to Work Well
A softphone app needs a reasonably stable internet connection, Wi-Fi or a decent mobile data signal, to deliver good call quality, the same underlying principles as any VoIP call apply. In areas with poor mobile signal, the app-based approach can struggle more than a traditional cellular call, this is worth testing in your specific coverage areas before relying on it as your primary calling method while out of office.
Why This Matters for Resilience Too
Beyond convenience, mobile extension access is a genuine resilience feature: if your office loses power or internet entirely, calls can be configured to automatically redirect to staff mobile numbers, meaning the business stays reachable even during a site-level outage, load shedding being the obvious South African example. This turns what could be a full communications blackout into a manageable, temporary redirect.
Practical Considerations
Battery usage is a fair consideration, a softphone app running in the background does use some additional battery compared to no app at all, though this is generally modest on modern phones. It's also worth setting clear expectations with staff about when they're expected to be reachable via the app versus genuinely off duty, since the always-available nature of mobile extensions can blur work-life boundaries if not managed thoughtfully.
